What is Classical Chinese Acupuncture?
Welcome to Evolve Wellness Spa’s Classical Chinese Acupuncture Clinic, under the direction of licensed acupuncturist Andrew Macfarlane, MS, L.Ac. With so many modalities of healthcare available today, it can be confusing and at times overwhelming to choose an appropriate therapy when faced with illness or when simply trying to nourish and support one’s health and vitality. Evolve Wellness Spa is very pleased to offer a truly unique and valuable addition to the current healthcare options here in Pittsburgh. Classical Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that has stood the test of time and continues to be as relevant and effective in our modern society as it was in antiquity.
Classical Chinese Acupuncture, which is distinct from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM–the most commonly practiced form of acupuncture today), is a profound and ancient holistic medical system. Classical Acupuncture encompasses a complete understanding of the nature and development of health and illness and the ability to treat an incredibly wide array of conditions. As such, it allows the skilled practitioner to compassionately guide and empower patients to release their suffering and live a life full of vibrant health, peace, and harmony.
TCM, in contrast to Classical Acupuncture, is a standardized and simplified form of acupuncture developed in the 20th century under the influence of Communist rule in China. In the quest for communist uniformity, many important and unique aspects of Classical Chinese medicine were unfortunately omitted. Although TCM can still be quite effective, it lacks the depth and potential of Classical Acupuncture. Classical Acupuncture is acupuncture as it was during the height of its development, in all its richness and complexity. Sadly, there are only a few schools in the world that offer training in the complete system of Classical Chinese Acupuncture, and many licensed acupuncturists are not even aware of the differences between Classical Chinese Acupuncture and TCM.
Classical Chinese Acupuncture encompasses a multitude of Chinese medical traditions which stem from Taoist roots. Firmly rooted in principles from the ancient texts of Chinese medicine, equal weight and importance is given to physiological, psycho-spiritual, philosophical, and theological aspects of Chinese medicine. Utilizing a complete theoretical and clinical understanding of the 68 acupuncture meridians, as opposed to the 14 acupuncture meridians commonly employed by TCM practitioners, Classical Chinese Acupuncture stands out as a complete stand-alone healing modality. Rooted in the vast wisdom of a 3000 year-old medical tradition, it is an ever-evolving and living art form, excelling in precisely tailored, individualized, and most importantly, highly effective treatments.
On a personal note, Andrew Macfarlane MS, L.Ac feels humbled and grateful to be able to share this modality with the wonderful residents of Pittsburgh. He honors the opportunity to work with you and undertakes a sincere and heartfelt commitment to helping each and every patient he has the good fortune to work with.
